Visit Day |
So I first took the bus from school back to Linda Vista to go into San Diego Cooperative Charter School, and when I first walked in I saw a substitute teacher, so he told me my mentor was going to be out for this week however he said I could still do my Internship. Working with 8th Graders was pretty easy, yet they were distant towards me which I don't mind. The math content was functions, and later moved onto science about newtons 3 laws of motion. I got to help a few kids then and there, for the entire day was fun. My idea for my internship project is to take notes for them or create a project while also learning math.

I hope Mr. Cooper comes back to teaching within January 10, and I hope I can get along with 8 graders. I want to be a Vetinarian, however being able to teach is kind of fun, so I'm afraid I can't find a career choice that I will be satisfied. So what I'm doing in 8th grade math is helping 8th graders with any problems with math, or science since those are my two favorite subjects. Right now I'm a intern so not much I can do at the moment besides helping as much as possible. I went to San Diego Cooperative Charter School 3 years ago, however it's changed so much by new teachers, and new classes so I'm learning at the same time. Me and Mr. Sheffler we've talked math, or his college and teacher experiences, and getting to be apart of teaching will give me social experience and help me teach math, and see how younger people are dealing with middle school. I can't see my fututre, however I only know God will be there by my side.

The substitute for Mr. Coopers class is Mr. Sheffler and he is 54 years old. He's told me about 1 daughters, and is married. He works as substitute teacher, and is a photographer. He's told me he's teached middle school, and kindergraden once, so he's always learning the same math, and he takes photos of seniors, posts are on his face book(https://www.facebook.com/donsheffler?lst=100007588818596%3A1546596013%3A1483591530). Really good at teaching math because I learned functions in only 5 minutes, and really has a wonder personallity, yet Mr. Cooper isn't here I still love working with Mr. Sheffler, and I will continue to keep working hard.

SDCCS mission statement:
"The San Diego Cooperative Charter School supports a progressive, developmentally based, child-centered community for active and collaborative student learning where shared values of family, diversity, relationship, creativity and academic excellence flourish." Mr. Sheffler is an amazing teacher who helps as many 8th graders during the period, and is open to talk about anything, and so welcomming. Although he doesn't work here as a full fledge teacher however he alone brings SDCCS mission into life, and is able to make many relationships between students while teaching math. In the past 3 years I went to SDCCS, the schools grown so much since I've been gone, even Mr. Cooper is still a great math teacher, and a I still look up to. However there isn't that much diversity at SDCCS and some students are always off task, and have low grades. |

During my internship the one thing that suprised me, is that these kids are using the tablets I used 3 years ago, but also that it had new programs for projects they do in class. For instance we did a project learning about newtons 3 laws, and these 8th graders were able to copy, cut, draw, and finish 2 sections that was assigned in one class. They also use edmodo to turn in all their homework using their tablets too, so they don't lose their homework, and stay organized which is cool. This suprised me this first week of internship.

Since January 3 I met Mr. B and his job at SDCCS is Instructual Assistant which means he helps 8th Graders in math, and assist with helping Mr. Sheffler. I talk to Mr. B often and right now he's attending California State University San Marcos. Mr. B is working to get a degree in Kinesiology which is the study of the mechanics of body movement in physical education. My Co-worker wants to become a P.E teacher for middle school students. Mr. B is working at Callahan it is a Irish Pub/Brewery.

Since the start of my internship I have been helping with anything to relieve Mr. Sheffler, and Mr. B from the tireless math/science work. Even the students, at least 20% of students will work hard, 20% will fail, and 60% will be average, so I plan to help work with the adults and students at SDCCS as much I can. This week I've been learning functions, function rules, linear equtions, elimination, substitution, and direct variation to help prepare these 8th graders for friday quizzes.Every day me and my co-workers talk when we have a chance, then it's always 1 hour of math and science everyday but thursday since thats a half day. I know these students benefit from my work because, I helped grade their last weeks quiz, or any questions they have on assignments, and print out any copies needed (especially since a students has left for 2 weeks and needed 300 pages of math content).

January 11 |
Since two weeks have past I have an Idea what my Internship Project can be now, and I realized it while I was grading the 8th graders test. Like today many 8th graders just learned direct variation, constant variation, yet most of the kids didn't understand or know most of the steps to solving them, so I plan to create a system that lets the teachers know who needs help or review on any math/science problems. How I will do this is using the empty space on the walls to put a poster that you can out your name and question they have because It's a lot quicker to notice, and especially since there is 20 to 25 kids in the morning and afternoon. If I do happen to finish it I want it make it look stylish, and have the poster be notice able, so either bright yellow or blue color. I know I have time to work on it afterschool or lunch, and I can buy a blank template or design one my self, and probably take 2-3 days especailly since I have artistic skills. This will benefit the entire 8th grade class for a simple system to get teachers notice to students who need help. Especially when i'm gone and hopefully my poster/art can be used for many years.

I noticed the staff get along well when I eat lunch with the different staff that I see every day. They talk about trips they've gone or the weekends, and especially their jobs. The students are something else like I see 4 students who do barely average on tests talk a lot and often get yelled at, however both classes are fine with each other. One thing I loved going to SDCCS is being able to work comfortable, so being able to work inside or outside, or being able to take walks when feeling frustrated helped me. The staff can work well on projects at least I believe so since me, Mr. B and Mr. Sheffler were able to create this Friday's test by giving each other idea's and using last weeks test.

January 13 |
I see my role at internship between an adult or a student teacher in someways because my co-workers really like me and I enjoy being at SDCCS no matter how tired I seem and frustrated I am. However It's definitely hard trying to constantly wake up in the morning and be eager to learn more. The more I learn the more I realize how much I can teach others about math. I think that's my role to give as much help as I can.

January 17 |
Today I went on to look at other student blogs who are doing internship at HTHI so I commented on D'lano Sparks, Cindy Octotitla's, and Jayden Garcia's blogs.
From all three blogs D'lano is creating a documentary at Digital Gym which is amazing, Jayden is interning at a restaurant Rustic Root and preparing ingredients even before the food is cooked which you would need a lot of knowledge and team work which is amazing. Cindy Ocotillo's is interning at Cesar Chavez helping Elementary kids with anything which is what I am kind of doing. Between the three we've done similar experiences likes D'lano's use of technology, Jayden's experiences like preparing something or doing tasks ourselves, or Cindy's experiences with kids. But Also different because I have to teach math a lot or talk with other teachers nearby, and offer help to kids that need help in science to. |
January 18 |
The biggest challenge I face at internship is learning then teaching math to others everyday since every week theres a test and I need to be able to help them as much as possible. Another problem was getting use to 8th graders because both classes are very different in how they act and learn. I solved my first challenge by constantly just doing repetitions of math concepts and ask Mr. Sheffler for help when I needed to.
|
January 19 |
I'm limited to which 8th graders need help, and those who want help because there are several kids who don't know math that much or rather do something else besides math. Obviously I can't force them to do math so I struggle to get their attention and help them pass every Friday's quiz. I know the math but trying to put 8th graders realization on how behind they are in math is tough. I'm gonna constantly offer help and stay after school to help them if they need it.

I really do feel a difference between working and teaching at SDCCS rather that going and learning what the teachers give me. Having to always help kids with math I should be expected to know isn't as hard but just repeating the steps to do math really frustrates me, or making a lot of copies, and grading tests is really different from just learning. I feel internship will have me gain a sense of an actual job since it requires a lot of my time, and skills I need to be successful if I do try and get a career. Taking my experiences from Internship will help me manage my time and work process into the next semester. Internship has helped me with my education a lot by making me realize how behind I was in math. Doing this internship means a lot to me because I have this opportunity to gain something new working with Mr. Cooper, and I might consider doing a career as a teacher.

January 21 |
Since last week to now I am doing fine, but I talked with Mr. Cooper about tutoring after school or about my poster Idea and he said these 8th graders are doing okay and most of them will start to develop studying skills during 9th grade and he like's my Idea for the poster and I could start on it if I want to. But also Mr. Cooper is allowing me to create this weeks test on slope-intercept form and I finished it today, so it's going to be used this week. I'll start planning the poster right now and gather the materials tomorrow and finish it by wednesday that's my plan at least.
|
January 24 |
If you don't communicate with your mentor or co-workers it is harder to say what's on your mind. Like with Mr. Cooper he allowed me to make this weeks test about slope-intercept form, for the 8th graders. If I communicate with Mr. B about anything he's willing to do for me or others. I have an understanding that if you keep everything with yourself you get nothing done, so if I do decide to be a teacher I must be willing to communicate with the principal and with other teachers.

While I was creating my IPOL presentation I took the first hour thinking how the presentation should look and the questions I needed to answer. I'm using google slides to present my IPOL because it's accessible and easy to do. I don't want to write a speech but rather talk about it normally because that's just who I am and thats what I'm going to do. When I am going to be asked questions I'll try and answer the best I can from this entire month interning here so I should be fine. After that I realized how much I'm going to miss Interning at SDCCS because of the atmosphere and people I see everyday. I hope I at least made some sort of difference while being here because I hope these kids don't see me as a student teacher but more. By helping these 8th graders with math and science (mostly math) I hope they get a better understanding so when they enter 8th grade they can at least say they've done it. Everyday I walk into SDCCS into Mr. Coopers room and Integrated math started in the morning (unless it's Thursday) then went to their x-blocks, to morning class and I help them learn subjects of math, and they go through the sections of science they have. Not only that they have quizzes every week depending what they're learning so I would also prepare them before the quiz and ask them if they have questions, and when the quiz came I grade them afterwards. I also got to use the copy machine, and go with Mr. Cooper for one of his meetings.

January 26 |
Like Mr. Cooper I want to have the full understanding of math to explain better, and to have Mr. B's ability to get peoples attention. Working a job is tough especially if your teaching a subject when you go to school and told what to do. Since internship started I might consider being a teacher because Mr. Cooper and feeling welcomed by others or I have at least an Idea what I want to do.
|
January 30 |
I'm thankful for Mr. Cooper allowing me to do an Internship at my old school because again I can visit my old teachers and staff that I remember. I thank all the students that make me feel better when helping them, making me laugh, allowing me to play magic with some students. I thank Mr. B for someone I can talk to, and Mr. Cooper because they make this Internship all worth it.

January 31 |
I feel better to go to college because I've viewed what it's like to have a career, and if I'm going to work like Mr. Cooper I have to study more. I'm still not sure about the college yet but I will look into it more next year. I might want to pursue something in biology because it's very interesting or in math because of internship.

New Interns always take at least 1 picture a day and look at your blog posts so you don't forget to take a picture for a specific thing or so you end with 3 pictures every week. Skills you need are management in some areas, planning, tech skills, and at least be familiar with the work your going to do. Explore different hobbies that give you skills you need like practice math 1 hour a day or reading recipes to memorize.

This is my Internship Project, and it's 24 x 30 poster and I'm glad when I showed it to Mr. Cooper he loved it. I believe I did the best I could with the tools by me because I didn't need to edit the poster at all. Something that stands out is that now the classroom has more stuff on the wall.
